“Armor of God” Sermon Outline:
Set into context … found in Ephesians 6 … written by Paul, a Jew … written to those in Ephesus … modern day Turkey … to the holy ones, saints.
Ephesus … also mentioned in Acts 18 … Paul entered the synagogues there … reasoned with the Jews … took leave of them … to attend the LORD’s Feast in Jerusalem … told them God willing, he would return to them.
Acts 19 … Paul comes to Ephesus … again – goes to the synagogue and speaks boldly for three months.
Unusual miracles take place (handkerchiefs and aprons brought from his body to the sick – diseases left them and evil spirits went out of them.
Itinerant Jewish exorcists use the Name of Yeshua over those who had evil spirits … seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish priest … also did the same … with some bad results!
Many come to believe in this area … they confess and tell of their deeds … many practiced magic and bring their books and burn them in the sight of all.
Riots take place … worship of goddess diana.
Acts 20 … trying to get back to Jerusalem to observe Shavuot … testifying to Jews and Greeks (Acts shows went to Synagogues first).
Ephesus (in Turkey) … also mentioned in Revelation 2 … written by apostle John while exiled to island of Patmos.
When leave Patmos … first shore is Ephesus … spiritual warfare addressed by Paul … John writes to the seven churches, one which is Ephesus – lost first love … also lists where satan dwells, where his throne is.
Ephesians 6:10-12 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
We see – warfare and armor
We are to stand against: wiles / scheming’s … Greek word is: methodia “method”, trickery of
diabolos: false accuser / slanderer … devil
Hebrew word is: satan – adversary … Hebrew word picture – Sheen / Tet / Noon: the snake that destroys/devours life!
We wrestle (close hand combat) not against flesh and blood – but in the spirit realm (Greek: pneuma … Hebrew: ruach – breath, wind, spirit (all unseen).
What are we dealing with?
- principalities: chief … principal.
- powers: exousia – power, right, privilege, authority … counter the things of God … same word that Yeshua said to His disciples in Matthew 10.
- rulers of darkness: kosmokrator (Kosmos) … world ruler.
- spiritual hosts (not carnal) of wickedness (poneria: depravity, malice, iniquity – where we get our word for pornography) in heavenly places (above the sky, celestial).
Ephesians 6:13-18 “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—“
Easy way to remember
Begin with shield in front … leads to the helmet … down to the breastplate … goes to the sword … down to the belt … and finally to the shoes/feet.
One should ask … where did these items come from? The only scriptures available were: TaNaKh (Old Testament). Makes acronym (explain).
All references “it is written … and all scripture…” was the Tanakh. Writers are Jews.
Why refer to Roman soldier (Greek mindset) … who tortured Yeshua?
All these items are in the Tanakh … Yeshua fulfilled all messianic prophecies.
Remember David and Goliath?
1 Samuel 17:38-39 “So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail.
David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.”
I have not tested them … proved them … tried them … had not learned to use them … does this describe you with the armor of God?
- Shield – first time found in
Genesis 15:1 “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
Shield – in Hebrew: Magen – protector … heard before as in – Magen David (Star of David) on Israeli flag, or also known as Shield of David.
Numbers 24:17 “…a star shall arise out of Israel…“
This is a Messianic reference (prophecy) … already fulfilled by Yeshua.
However, notice today … a star rises out of Israel each morning … as the flag (Tallit) is raised!
Star – in Hebrew: Kokav – Kaf / Vav / Kaf / Vet
Two hands … a nail … inside!
Hebrew word picture: Shield – Magen – Mem / Gimel / Noon … Mighty Life lifted up (Yeshua said He is the Life) or also – Life of Messiah lifted up!
You have to come through Yeshua to get to me!
In Ephesians referred to as: Shield of Faith … who is your faith and trust in?
2 Samuel 22:1-4 “Then David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
And he said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.”
Trust – In Hebrew: chasah – to flee for protection … Chet / Samech / Hey = what comes from the propped or supported fence!
Let’s move on to the next two items of our armor.
- Helmet of Salvation / Breastplate of Righteousness
Talking about the Redeemer of Zion in:
Isaiah 59:17 “For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak.”
Helmet – in Hebrew: Koba … Kaf / Vav / Bet / Ayin
Hebrew word picture: see, know, experience, understand – the House of the nailed Hand!
Salvation – in Hebrew: Yeshua!
Breastplate – (coat of mail / corslet – as if twisted) of righteousness.
Righteousness In Hebrew: Tzedaqah – what comes from or what follows the door/pathway of the righteous man!
- Sword – first used in:
Genesis 3:24 “So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.”
Sword – in Hebrew: chereb … Chet / Reysh / Bet.
Chet is: a fence (protection) … Reysh / Bet = Rav, which is: leader or Rabbi (my teacher or great one).
John 1:49 “Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Notice a flaming sword … remember:
Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not My word like a fire? says the Lord, And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
Sword is Word of God … speak it in battle!
- Belt – girded your waist
Isaiah 11:1-2 & 5 “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
“Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
And faithfulness the belt of His waist.”
Ever wondered about what the seven Spirits of God are?
Revelation 5:6 “ And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. “
Belt of Truth … Truth – take Alef / Tav (meaning) … Mem (meaning) … place Mem in the middle of Alef and Tav … becomes the Hebrew word: Emet (Truth)!
Truth … also found in first three words of Genesis 1:1 … the last letter of each word spells – Emet!
shod (bind under feet / put on shoes or sandals) your feet with gospel of peace
Isaiah 52:7 “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace,
who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
Notice … all these references are from the Tanakh … a roman soldier?
And finally, an often-overlooked piece:
- praying always … in the Spirit (speaking in tongues).
Paul … in 1 Corinthians 14 … was talking about speaking in tongues … says that he will pray with the spirit – and will also pray with the understanding.
Ask Yeshua to baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire and to give you that prayer language! Be persistent!
Notice … when you include praying in the Spirit … there are a total of not 6 … but 7 pieces to the armor!
The seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet is: Zayin … Zayin is a weapon! All of this is your “weapon” against warfare!
Learn all these pieces … put them on daily … bind the enemy daily!
Mark 3:27 “No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.”
Bind these: principalities … powers … rulers of darkness and spiritual hosts of wickedness (four – Dalet: pathway or door) … of the enemy.
I add (from other scriptures) – baal the ruler of demons (Matthew 12:24) and the strongman (above).
Then put on the armor – daily! Wake up! There is a battle going on … at close contact (wrestle).
