“1 Samuel 7 (My Helper)” Sermon Outline:
The Ark of God had been captured by the Philistines … they were struck with plagues and tumors … they sent the Ark back … on a cart … hitched to two milk cows.
Ended up at border of Beth Shemesh (House of the sun) … people are working in the fields … they look up and see the Ark and rejoice.
The cart comes into the field (of Joshua) … ends up by a large stone … the wood of the cart is split … and cows are offered up as a burnt offering.
The Levites take the Ark … put it on the stone … 50,070 men of Beth Shemesh are killed, by ADONAI – because they looked into the Ark (protocol – carried on shoulders of priest (same for us today) … David later – 6 paces – sacrifice)
Looked … to look – have to remove mercy seat … removed where God sat (by an act of man’s hands) … removing God = removing His mercy … without mercy, all you have is death!
The men of Beth Shemesh trying to figure out what to do … contact people of Kiryat- Ye’arim (City of forests) … tell them to come get the Ark.
1 Samuel 7:1 “Then the men of Kirjath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.”
Avinadav – Av (Father) … Nadav (generosity; offer freely) … Father of generosity.
El’azar – El (God) … Azar (help, to surround, protect, aid – military ally) … God is my help.
On the hill
Psalm 121 “I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help?
2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.”
LORD (ADONAI) is mentioned 5x’s … 5th letter of alef-bet is Hey (behold/revealed/what comes from) … also breath, wind, spirit (Ruach) … my help!
John 14:16-18 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
1 Samuel 7:2-4 “ So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
20 = Kaf (Hand of blessing) … instead, they were lamenting (crying/wailing).
3 Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the Lord, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
4 So the children of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.”
Return – shoov (shin/bet) … destroy the house (repent)!
1 Samuel 7:5-6 “And Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”
6 So they gathered together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they fasted that day, and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.”
Samuel prayed … they fasted … confessed sin!
Mizpah – Story of Jacob … love for Rachel … works for Laban … deceit … now fleeing from Laban … Laban pursues … catches up … makes covenant … they gather stones … make a heap … and they eat there.
It is called Galeed (Gal Ed) … Heap of witness or testimony.
Genesis 31:48-49 “And Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore its name was called Galeed,
49 also Mizpah, because he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another.”
Mizpah – to watch … watchtower.
The enemy hears that children of Israel are gathering at Mizpah … they go up against them … Israel is afraid … they ask Samuel to keep praying for them.
Samuel offers a sacrifice … cried out to the LORD for Israel … and the LORD answered him … the LORD thundered with a loud thunder and confused them … Israel drives the enemy back.
1 Samuel 7:12 “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
Ebenezer – Even (stone) ezer (help) … stone of help … literally Even – Ha – Ezer (The Help Stone – The Stone of Help).
May that also be our prayer, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
1 Samuel 7:13 “So the Philistines were subdued, and they did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.”
